The Rudder: Guiding Orthodox Life & Faith’s Journey

Welcome to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church podcast, where we delve into the spiritual riches of Orthodox Christianity. In today’s episode, we are honored to have Father Justinian of Arizona share his enlightening sermon on The Rudder, a cornerstone of Orthodox Christian teachings and a beacon of light guiding the faithful throughout the centuries.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, it is a great privilege to explore with you a priceless gem within our beloved Orthodox Church – The Rudder, or Pedalion. This essential work serves as a guiding force, much like a ship’s rudder, steering us through life’s tumultuous waters and leading us ever closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Rudder is an extensive compilation of canons and decrees from a variety of sources, including the Apostles, Ecumenical Councils, Local Councils, and Holy Fathers. It is through these sacred canons that our Church has navigated the evolving world, preserving and safeguarding the faith handed down to us by our Lord and His apostles.

As we examine The Rudder more closely, we become aware of its profound impact on our faith and everyday lives. It shapes our worship, informs our clergy, and instructs us on how to live a Christ-centered life. The Rudder transcends its role as a historical document; it is a living testament to the wisdom, unity, and endurance of our Orthodox faith.

Our cherished Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. We stand on the shoulders of spiritual giants – the holy men and women who, throughout the centuries, have dedicated their lives to preserving and transmitting the faith we so deeply treasure. The Rudder is a testament to their unwavering commitment and serves as a steadfast anchor in a world of ever-shifting morals and beliefs.

In an era marked by increasing secularism and moral relativism, The Rudder serves as a lighthouse, illuminating our path through the stormy seas of modernity. As Orthodox Christians, we must remain anchored to the teachings and canons contained within its pages, ensuring that our faith stays steadfast and authentic.

As we study The Rudder, let us also remember the importance of humility, prayer, and discernment in our spiritual journey. It is through humble submission to God’s will, fervent prayer, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit that we can genuinely internalize the teachings found within The Rudder and apply them to our lives.

So, my brothers and sisters, let us immerse ourselves in the wisdom of The Rudder, seeking divine guidance from the Holy Spirit as we endeavor to live in accordance with God’s will. May we navigate the challenges of our lives with the strength, unity, and wisdom that The Rudder provides, always keeping our eyes fixed upon our ultimate destination – the Kingdom of Heaven.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

We express our deepest gratitude to Father Justinian for sharing his wisdom and insights on The Rudder. We hope you, dear listeners, have gained a richer understanding of this indispensable guide, empowering you to navigate your spiritual journey with clarity and purpose. Until next time, may God’s grace be with you all.
